Spectroscopic Studies of 1,4-bis(4-dimethylaminobenzyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene as Colorimetric Reagent for Cu

A chromogenic Schiff base ligand 1,4-bis(4-dimethylaminobenzyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene (BDABD), has been synthesized and characterized by CHN elemental analysis, FT-IR, H NMR and C NMR 1 13 spectroscopy. Experimental parameters that effect the ligand-metal ion complexation such as solvent, color stability, metal and ligand concentrations were investigated. Results show that BDABD is preferentially bind to Cu in acetone. The addition of Cu to the ligand in acetone gives rise to a large bathochromic shift, 2+ 2+ resulting in a change of color from yellow to orange. The reaction is instantaneous and the absorbance for more than 24 hr. From the linear regression analysis, Beer’s law was obeyed over 1.0 8.0 × 10 M Cu . The 6 2+ stoichiometric study shows that Cu and BDABD combine in the mole ratio of 1:1 with the formation constant 2+ equals to 1.44 × 10 . The average molar absorptivity and Sandell sensitivity were found to be 6.97 × 10 L 7 4 mol cm and 0.0009 μg cm , respectively. 1 1 2
